Computer put to sleep..

  • Jul. 22nd, 2008 at 1:03 AM

... but hopefully only until sometime next week. I stil need to arrange broadband in my new flat, so, unless I can 'borrow' some wifi from a neighbor, I'll be offline (at least at home) for a few days.. Gasp!

Nice story, good FX, not too complicated. Perfect for a Sunday eve.

The shock doctrine

  • Jul. 20th, 2008 at 11:08 AM

I found this book while checking out a paperback bookstore. Nologo was a good book, so I had to take a look at this one. Youtube has (as usual) lots of stuff about the whole subject and also interviews with the author.

Flat in London

  • Jul. 19th, 2008 at 7:58 PM

This afternoon, I returned from my short stay in London, when I mainly picked up the keys, spent a bit of time walking thru the city, and had a quiet eve watching TV. Nanju (a guy whom we met during an internship he did in Geneva for 4 months) had something unplanned and we couldn't meet up. Perhaps next Saturday.

But back to the flat... :-D Some pics...

As you enter, bathroom is directly on your right, bedroom is next door on the right. On the left the living/kitchen. The door in front is a tiny storage room, where the heater, fuse, etc are. Best of all is that there's enough space for my sofa bed in the living.

Keys of the flat

  • Jul. 17th, 2008 at 11:13 PM

Tomorrow afternoon, I'm flying to London in order to get the keys of the flat and officially 'take possession' of it. Taking some stuff with me (some clothing, bed stuff, an iron), and I'm coming back on Saturday noon.

The flight is not expensive, and I can be sure that the flat is there, will take pictures and officially have an address in London.

Anyone wants anything from London?

First migration night..

  • Jul. 12th, 2008 at 10:49 AM

This first night went pretty fine. No big issues, and we migrated a grand total of 12 ports. It took us about 2 hours in total, and Alex gave me a lift home, so I can't complain :)

Tonight it's going to be a bit longer: 24 ports, and I'll have to get a taxi *checks night bus service* I wish MOA'd be open tonight, so I could go to Vernier on foot, and get one of their buses home LOL. Well, if it doesn't rain too much, I'll be just fine.

After this weekend, there'll be just a few ports left to migrate, but most likely it won't be me doing the cabling stuff.

Results of flat search

  • Jul. 6th, 2008 at 11:41 AM

I didn't post during my week in London. I feel like naked w/o internet access out of work. Yeah, there are cybercafes and stuff, but I was busy relaxing from work and my frenzy flat hunt :)

I saw a few flats, some close to the office, some far, but all of them expensive. This is a bit less expensive, and just three stops away from the office and 20 minutes away from London underground's zone 1.

My flat (crosses fingers) is in that egg-shaped building by the soccer field.

Searching for a flat in London is much different than in Geneva. Geneva has a pronounced shortage of flats, whereas in London there's plenty. Prices have gone a bit crazy these last months, but at least there's choice.

People in the office are great. My new boss, very understanding. There's a new guy that started this last Monday, and also Mike, my former boss and now colleague. Other known faces around our desks, too.

My official start date is July 28th. Next week will be me last oncall week in Geneva (woohoo!) Also, a further step in the migration, and some other pending things I want to solve before leaving.

Moving plans and dates are progressing. I'll have my stuff stored until the end of the month, and then delivered to my new flat, once I"m already living in London. Still more cleaning to do here, and definitely some packing. Tomorrow, I'm getting in touch with the moving agency (yet another one is visiting early morning) and sort out those details.

Mobile #, bank acct., flat.. I think I'm mostly ready to move!

Packing..

  • Jun. 29th, 2008 at 11:40 AM

What I supposed it might have been a kind of quiet evening became a full-class night out: Phare for drinks, then we hit Organic (in its last eve!), but it was rather empty so decided to give MOA a try.

What can I say about MOA.. Music on the main dancefloor kind of sucked, but there were two other (smaller) rooms and enough room for everybody. I had fun anyway (specially the chats with Carlos and also the good laughs), and we headed home around 4am.

My flight to London leaves at around 3pm. Oh, I think I will hit the bed early today :)

Apartment cleaning

  • Jun. 28th, 2008 at 1:02 PM

Slow but steadily, I'm cleaning up the apartment. The idea is to leave it pretty much clean so the final cleaning stage will be fast and light..

Sindy Beach Party this evening. Weather forecast says temperatures will be very nice. I can't wait..

But now, pizza and papers time. I deserve it.

Full day

  • Jun. 26th, 2008 at 6:43 PM

A woman from a moving company visited before work. Day at work was busy, but I feel accomplished. I received phone calls from two other agencies, and arranged an appointment with one of them, whereas the other one will send an approximate quote by email. In the afternoon, I had to sneak out a bit earlier so to meet up with Rob and John, who came to pick up the shelf and the desk.

Now, after having read some email, a shower, dinner (yeah, I know, it's a bit early), and then off to meet up with friends, and watch the game... Spain-Russia, semifinals.. woohoo!

Jun. 25th, 2008

  • 9:57 PM

Today, I sold the bike to a colleague, and the computer desk and the shelf to a couple of nice guys. The bike is already gone, and the guys are coming back tomorrow to take away their stuff. Just the sofa-bed to go. I might actually take it with me..

Tomorrow morning, a woman from a moving company is coming over to give me a quote on how much they'd charge me for moving my stuff to London. I have a good feeling. We'll see.

Next week is London, where I'll wear my flat-hunting hat..

But tomorrow evening, we're watching the semifinals game between Spain and Russia. Woohoo!!

Tuesday..

  • Jun. 24th, 2008 at 10:32 PM

Same old, same old.. Hot temperatures, work is busy as usual, but I'm in a break between showing the flat and getting ready to arrange moving and find a new flat in London.

But today it was an evening for myself: not much to do, I don't even feel like preparng dinner, so I'm eating some fruit, yogurt and will go to sleep early.

.. I met like 8 people while showing the flat. One gets used to talking to people, asking about other flats they've been seeing, what they do.. It's been a learning experience, and we have about 5-6 people to mention in the early cancellation letter for the agency.

I sold the TV and DVD this afternoon. It's pretty cool, but I missed it like 30 minutes after getting rid of it. I watched on my computer the last episode of QaF's 3rd season.

Early night today. Some reading, and good sleep. Tomorrow it'll be another day of groceries' shopping, cleaning up the flat a bit more, and check the internet on flats for rent.

Geneva's weather is summer-like at last. 25 Celsius during the day or so. Welcome!

Flat visit

  • Jun. 19th, 2008 at 9:14 PM

I posted a small ad in a local forum and hey, already 5 people have visited the flat today, two will between tomorrow and Saturday..

So far, there are 4 people interested in it. Pretty good, huh? I'm happy this is going that well. Hopefully this will be just an anecdote to talk about in a few weeks' time.

On the other hand, I received a first reply from the woman at the London agency that would help me look for a flat. The initial budget is too low for the renting market conditions over there (she said it increased 15% in the last 12 months.) So, I decided to give it a go at the rates she mentions, while contacting another agency on the side.

All in all, it's been a busy day. I will have something for dinner now and enjoy of some drinks with friends this eve. I need some rest :)

Showing the flat

  • Jun. 17th, 2008 at 11:53 PM

A couple (friends of Aggie's), and a colleague (Heiko) visited the flat this afternoon. Heiko is interested and the couple should tell me tomorrow. There might be a third person (I sent her pictures and some info.) If at least two of these three candidates are in it, I can consider the mission accomplished.

[EDIT]: Spoke too soon. The couple got a flat they had recently applied for, and I haven't heard from the P&G employee.. At least my colleague is still interested. *posting ad on local forums*

Photo set

I managed to pick some pics from this last session with Raul. I think he's very talented and achieves cool effects with only light (the pics have not been retouched, except from the inclusion of the url :-P )

I've yet to check out the pics Raul took during our meetup in Bern.. *writes down*

Busy Monday (already)

  • Jun. 16th, 2008 at 9:42 PM

I had to leave the office early in the afternoon to visit the Tenants association (Association des locataires). For just a few questions I had to become member of the association (worth 75 Swiss francs).. Damn.. But it was well spent, and I guess I should've done it long time ago, so..

Pretty good news regarding the issue on the ceiling: it turns out I don't have to pay for it, as it wasn't my fault and lingering in notifying the agency did not worsen the issue (water leak from an absent-minded neighbor who left the faucet open.)

A friend of a friend already showed interest for the flat, and I sold the microwave (after like, 15 minutes of publishing it :) I hope the other stuff goes away soon.

Long night at work..

.. and I think I caught a cold *runny nose*

Zurich and Bern

  • Jun. 7th, 2008 at 12:29 AM

For once, I have plans for the weekend (that do not take place in Geneva.)

Saturday, Zurich. Meeting up with Oezlem. We haven't seen each other since she left Geneva. I'm looking forward to seeing her. Taking my photo camera with me ;-)

Maybe meeting up with Mario in the afternoon. It may be the last time for a good while we have a chance to catch up.

Beers, dinner and cinema (Indiana Jones) with Tiny. I'm sleeping at his place, so I can save some time going to Bern on Sunday. Meeting up with Raul, that photographer I know.

Hopefully, either Sunday afternoon or Tuesday, I'll be having a beer with Julien, who's back this weekend from Berlin. Really good timing.

Sleepy now. Need to rest.
